Road honouring Mbambo opened after N$18m facelift
Road authority outlines major upgrades
Kavango East governor Hamunyera Hambyuka praised Dr Samuel Mbambo's legacy of service to the region and the nation.
Former governor and diplomat Dr Samuel Kaveto Mbambo has been honoured for his decades of public service with the renaming of the 1.9-kilometre Rundu University of Namibia (Unam) campus road in his name.
Regional leaders, Roads Authority officials and members of the public attended Wednesday’s ceremony, which also marked the official opening of the upgraded Dr Samuel Kaveto Mbambo Road.
The project, valued at over N$18 million, has now been upgraded to bitumen standard.
Delivering the keynote address, Kavango East governor Hamunyera Hambyuka praised Dr Mbambo’s legacy of service to the region and the nation.
“This renaming is not merely a matter of alternating nameplates. It represents a deliberate and symbolic gesture of recognition, appreciation and legacy,” he said. “Dr Mbambo served this region with commitment, integrity and humility, always prioritising community development, education and peace.”
Boosting economic activities
The upgraded road connects the Track 0804 intersection, the Unams Rundu campus, and nearby residential areas.
According to Hambyuka, it also helps ease congestion on Eugene Kakukuru Street – the town’s only alternative route – and boosts economic activity and investor confidence.
He extended gratitude to former works and transport minister John Mutorwa for initiating the renaming proposal.
“Honourable Mutorwa’s vision of recognising our heroes while they are still with us is commendable and aligns with our national values,” Hambyuka said.
A sustainable road network
Roads Authority CEO Conrad Lutombi said the Dr Samuel Kaveto Mbambo was among several projects initiated under a 2021 memorandum of agreement with the Rundu Town Council.
Lutombi listed completed roads, including Kaisosi-Maria Mwenge, Semnyuma traffic circle (Phases 1 and 2) and John Mutorwa Amta access.
He called for the continued implementation of pending extensions, including those for Semnyuma and John Mutorwa roads, as well as upgrades to Archbishop Haufiku and Kurekure roads.
On broader regional infrastructure, Lutombi announced progress on key road works.
“We are no longer constructing a gravel road between Andara and Shamaturu – it is now a low-volume sealed road,” he explained, adding that the Yona-Jarajara and Ngaute-Karukvisa links are also in line for bitumen upgrades.
“We are committed to ensuring a sustainable road network that meets national and regional development goals. By year-end, potholes along Rundu-Divundu Phase 3 will be a thing of the past,” he pledged.
