RA denies abandoning projects amid delays

The Roads Authority (RA) has denied claims that government has abandoned road construction projects, saying work will continue as funding becomes available.In a statement, the authority acknowledged concerns from road users, regional councils and communities about slow progress on road infrastructure projects across Namibia.It said outstanding sections of ongoing projects remained commitments of government, the RA and the Road Fund Administration (RFA), with implementation dependent on annual funding allocations.The three institutions are discussing ways to strengthen and diversify funding for road construction and maintenance, including short-, medium- and long-term financing strategies.The RA said road projects were being implemented in phases because of limited funding, competing national priorities and wider fiscal pressures. It added that projects, particularly those nearing completion, would be prioritised to sustain progress.The authority acknowledged that poor road conditions and delays cause inconvenience, raise safety concerns and increase transport costs for road users.The road aheadIt said measures to address the challenges included targeted maintenance, faster procurement processes and improved project sequencing. The RA also admitted that some projects had been delayed and said it was working to resolve the issues affecting implementation.The authority urged the public and other stakeholders to seek verified information on project timelines, progress and planned interventions directly from the RA.It said it remained committed to maintaining and expanding Namibia’s road network, including strategic access roads, district roads and major national routes, despite the financial constraints.The RA appealed for patience and understanding, saying safe and reliable road infrastructure remained essential for economic growth, social development and national connectivity.
