N$1.36bn Omaruru-Uis road still unfunded

The Roads Authority (RA) says the upgrading of the Omaruru-Uis road will cost an estimated N$1.36 billion, with no confirmed funding, no completed design and no procurement this financial year.RA spokesperson Hileni Fillemon said the road, registered as M0064 and known as the C36, is included in the authority's integrated strategic business plan for 2026/27 to 2030/31, with implementation planned over five years.The route is 123 kilometres long. Six kilometres have been upgraded to bitumen standard, two kilometres from Omaruru and four kilometres from Uis.The estimate for the remaining 117 kilometres covers design and supervision consultancy, land and property compensation, and construction."Funding has not yet been confirmed, and implementation remains subject to the availability of funds," Fillemon said.She said detailed design work and tender documentation have not been completed and no procurement activities are planned during the current financial year."The tender advertisement date has therefore not been determined," she said.Long road ahead The gravel section was last regravelled in the 2019/20 financial year and no further regravelling is planned. The six kilometres already tarred are budgeted for resealing in 2027/28.The road came up at the Erongo Regional Council's last ordinary meeting on 10 August, where chairperson Lazarus Kanelombe reported a familiarisation visit to the Omaruru-Uis and Uis-Omatjete corridors by Dâures constituency councillor Inecia Brandt, deputy minister of works Hans Haikali, among others."We welcome the indication that the Omaruru-Uis Road has been prioritised for implementation and look forward to its commencement," Kanelombe said.On the Uis-Omatjete corridor, Fillemon said no project exists."There is currently no direct road project planned for the approximately 69 km route between Uis and Omatjete," she said.Omatjete is reached from Uis via the M0076 and D2344. The M0076 is earmarked for upgrading to bitumen standard.
