The Hardap Region has made notable progress in maintaining and expanding its water infrastructure, despite concerns in some areas.

This is according to Hardap governor Riaan McNab, who delivered the 2024/25 State of the Region Address earlier today.

A total of 480 water points are currently maintained across the region, serving as vital lifelines for thousands of rural residents.

However, the governor acknowledged that 38 of these water points produce poor-quality water, prompting authorities to rely on tanker deliveries to supply clean water until permanent solutions are in place.

“This intervention ensures that no community is left behind,” McNab said.

The governor further reported that six new boreholes were successfully drilled, while one was unsuccessful.

Additionally, nine newly drilled boreholes have already been equipped and installed. Eight water points were rehabilitated.

Community ownership

As part of efforts to expand water access, three small pipeline extensions were completed in Khorakhorobes, Gasup and Rooikrans, connecting communities to clean and reliable water sources.

In addition, 116 water points in the Salt Block area continue to receive water via tanker deliveries under an emergency supply plan that also included 16 critical interventions for schools, clinics and other government facilities.

The region also carried out 436 infrastructure repairs, covering solar systems, pipelines, windmills and engines.

As part of the community-based management approach under the rural water supply programme, 41 water point committees have been established, enabling communities to take greater ownership of their water resources.

Meanwhile, 200 beneficiaries of rural toilet schemes received training in sanitation and maintenance.
