Castlebet pumps N$300,000 into July Cup
Castlebet Namibia has announced a major sponsorship of N$300,000 for the Namibia Horse Racing Association’s (NHRA) annual event, set for 4 July in Rehoboth.
The Castlebet July Cup and is expected to be the biggest and richest edition hosted by the NHRA to date.
Castlebet spokesperson David Agusto said the sponsorship marks a new chapter for the company, which has traditionally been associated with football and betting.
“It is a pleasure for us to be part of this event. This will be the biggest and richest edition so far,” Agusto said. “The previous event stood at N$250,000, and we have increased that to N$300,000. This is a new direction for us, and we are committed to growing and making it better.”
Agusto added that the partnership reflects Castlebet’s broader strategy to diversify its involvement in Namibian sport.
NHRA public relations officer Chantelle Mouton described the sponsorship as a milestone for horse racing in the country.
“This level of support is significant for the sport,” Mouton said. “The N$300,000 will go towards prize money and encourage strong participation from horse owners, trainers and jockeys from across Namibia.”
NHRA president Gottfried Mootu also welcomed the support, noting its importance at a crucial time for the sport.
“Our vision is for this event to compete with, or even surpass, established races such as the Durban July,” Mootu said, referring to Africa’s most prestigious horse race, which boasts a prize pool of around R10 million.
He added that horse racing plays an important role in communities nationwide and that the NHRA remains committed to expanding the sport across all regions.
The Castlebet July Cup is expected to draw participants and spectators from across the country, boosting the profile of horse racing in Namibia.
