SQUASH CIGARETTES

SQUASH CIGARETTES: The health ministry observed World No Tobacco Day, a global health campaign, in Outjo in the Kunene region last week. The day aims to raise awareness about the health hazards associated with tobacco use and to promote the implementation of effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption. This observance underscores the severe health, social, environmental, and economic impacts of tobacco use, as well as the misleading practices employed by tobacco and nicotine companies.

This year the day was themed 'Unmasking The Appeal', which focuses on revealing how industries target youth through flavoured products, deceptive marketing and addictive product designs to create lifelong users.

WHO statistics show that in 2022, about 11.2% of Namibians aged 15 and older were smokers. This included 19.2% of men and 4% of women. Among Namibian youths aged 13-15, 31.1% reported using tobacco products, with rates of 31.9% for boys and 29.9% for girls.
