Schools urged to support HPV vaccination campaign

The health ministry has announced that the introduction of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine into the national routine immunisation schedule will take place later than initially planned.Originally slated for 2 to 13 June, the programme has been rescheduled to run from 30 June to 18 July.The ministry said the adjustment was necessary to ensure that all required preparations are in place.Health ministry executive director Penda Ithindi announced the date change in a memorandum addressed to the education ministry executive director Erastus Haitengela.Ithindi explained that the HPV vaccination programme is primarily a school-based intervention, targeting girls aged nine to 14."For that reason, an effective school health and outreach programme is key to ensuring a successful roll-out."Prevention better than cure Ithindi urged the education ministry to collaborate with the health ministry “in this crucial national undertaking” by helping to mobilise teachers, parents and caregivers to raise awareness about the importance of vaccination for eligible girls.The health ministry confirmed that the vaccine will also be available at public health facilities and during outreach visits for out-of-school girls.Schools in all fourteen regions have been requested to register eligible beneficiaries between 30 June and 18 July, and to coordinate with local health district authorities to support effective planning and ensure sufficient resource allocation during the roll-out phases.The memorandum further noted that HPV infection is the most common viral infection of the reproductive tract.“HPV infection accounts for more than 90% of anal and cervical cancer, around 70% of vaginal and vulvar cancers, and more than 60% of penile cancers,” the ministry noted. - tuyeimo@nmh-hub.com.na
