Revamped breast cancer clinic opens in Swakop

CLAUDIA REITER
A major milestone in Namibia’s decentralised cancer care was reached on 10 June with the official opening of the modernised breast clinic at the state hospital in Swakopmund. The clinic is the result of a joint initiative between the health ministry, the Cancer Association of Namibia (CAN) and the Langer Heinrich Uranium Mine (LHU).

The breast clinic, open every Tuesday from 08:00 to 13:00, is part of a national programme aimed at improving access to cancer screening and treatment, particularly for breast cancer.

Thanks to extensive renovations funded by LHU, the clinic now offers improved conditions for early diagnosis and prompt treatment.

The project aligns with the global campaign of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) under the theme 'Close the Care Gap', which advocates for more equitable and widespread access to cancer care.

"Through close collaboration between CAN, the ministry and committed partners like LHU, patients in the Erongo region now benefit as well. Long journeys to Windhoek are no longer necessary, and waiting times for breast examinations and biopsies have been reduced from several months to just a few weeks," a statement on the clinic noted.

CAN also announced that another breast clinic will soon open at the state hospital in Walvis Bay.
