Only one confirmed mpox case, ministry says
NEWS IN SHORT
Health ministry spokesperson Walters Kamaya yesterday confirmed that reports claiming 44 cases of mpox had been reported in Swakopmund were inaccurate.
He said there is still only one confirmed case in the coastal town.
The figure of 44 cases is merely the "contact tracing" figure, he clarified.
The ministry of health confirmed Namibia’s first case of mpox last weekend, officially declaring an outbreak in accordance with World Health Organisation (WHO) protocols.
Health minister Dr Esperance Luvindao said the patient is receiving treatment in isolation at the Swakopmund District Hospital and is in stable condition.
Namibia has now joined 17 other African countries currently reporting active mpox cases, including the DRC, Zambia, Malawi and Tanzania.
Mpox is an infectious disease that can cause a painful rash, enlarged lymph nodes, fever, headache, muscle ache, back pain and low energy. Most people fully recover, but some get very sick.
