Ongwediva teen dies months after road accident

Kenya Kambowe
A 16-year-old girl reportedly died last Friday in Ongwediva after succumbing to injuries sustained four months ago when she reportedly tried to avoid an oncoming vehicle.

According to a police report, the Grade 9 learner’s ordeal began on 28 August, when she fell onto the tarred road after coming close to colliding with a vehicle on her way to school.

Police said she at first appeared unhurt and continued attending classes. However, in early September, her health reportedly began to decline and she was hospitalised.

The police said medical exams revealed internal bleeding and injuries to her spinal cord, leading to paralysis and severe pain that left her unable to sit or walk.

Despite months of treatment, she passed away on Friday morning. The Oshana police expressed concern over the delayed reporting of the accident.

“Information about the incident only reached the police on 4 December," police stated.

"No report was made immediately when the child fell, and details pertaining to the driver or vehicle remain unknown."

Investigations continue pending post-mortem results.
