Lüderitz clinic gets much-needed facelift

The official reopening of the revamped Primary Health Care (PHC) Clinic in Lüderitz on Tuesday was met with relief and appreciation from both healthcare workers and local residents.

“Our clinic was in a bad state. We could not render quality care,” said registered nurse Nathasa Simon, head of the clinic, at the opening of the refurbished facility.

“The walls were tarnished with the paint peeling off, and the floor was damaged. We didn't even have an exit door, and proper ventilation also lacked,” she added.

Renovations included new floor tiling, fresh coats of paint and the installation of a brand-new exit door.

"Now when you enter, it feels like entering a private healthcare facility.”

Simon urged both staff and community members to take responsibility for preserving the clinic. “Please refrain from any form of vandalism, and take pride in keeping the clinic clean and well maintained so it remains up to standard.”

Regional constituency councillor Susan Ndjaleka praised the project as a great example of stakeholder collaboration, saying it reflected a shared commitment to the well-being of the community.

Among the stakeholders who responded to the call for support was Bourbon, a company in the oil and gas supply industry, which contributed N$200 000 to the project, Ndjaleka said.

The health ministry provided transport for materials and the Namibian Correctional Service assisted with labour.

"Community members donated plants and curtains while the employees of the hospital participated actively in the renovation process," she added.

Bourbon representative Eoné Besser said the company was proud to have contributed to the initiative. “May this clinic continue to make a difference in the lives of many."

During the occasion, Ndjaleka announced that residents can also look forward to a mental health service being introduced in the //Kharas region.

Acting chief medical officer for the //Kharas region Dr Evans Sanga said the renovations were about more than a structural facelift.

“This is a real milestone. It represents our unwavering dedication to ensuring that every individual in the community receives the highest quality of care. This partnership reflects a shared vision of health and wellness, with the synergy between the private sector and public health creating transformative impacts.”
