Keeping EMA’s wheels turning

STAFF REPORTER
The Emergency Medical Assistance (EMA), a registered non-profit organisation, continues to live up to its slogan 'There When You Need Us'.

This year alone, EMA has already provided assistance valued at more than N$400 000 to patients in need across Namibia.

Relying entirely on public and corporate donations, EMA delivers critical emergency services to the community. In 2023, international support gave the organisation a significant boost when Dirk Pfeiffer of ITLS Germany visited Namibia and witnessed the organisation’s work first-hand. Moved by what he saw, Pfeiffer appealed to his network in Germany and Austria for support.

His call was quickly answered. Klaus Meyer, chairman of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Notfallmedizin Fürth e.V. (AGNF), stepped forward with the donation of a state-of-the-art ventilator for emergency patients valued at over N$60 000. This paved the way for further donations from abroad.

At a recent donation event, EMA chair Fabian Martens, said: “Access to emergency and rescue services is essential for public health. These generous donations help us maintain a high standard of emergency and medical services for the Namibian public.”

The donated equipment was immediately deployed to ambulances and emergency vehicles, strengthening E.M.A.’s capacity to respond swiftly to calls for help.

“With the rising cost of providing emergency services, we appeal to individuals and businesses to support us through fuel sponsorships or financial donations,” Martens urged. “Sponsorships are vital, not just for us as an organisation, but for the patients who rely on us during emergencies.”
