Health ministry implored to pay unpaid overtime

The Public Service Union of Namibia (PSUN) issued a statement yesterday urging the health ministry to address the issue of unpaid overtime for emergency care practitioners (ECPs).According to the union, they have pleaded with the ministry since last year to honour its obligations."The office of the executive director has ignored our numerous communications in this regard, and we had to register the matter along with others with the Office of the Prime Minister," the union said.Ripple impactIt has been reported that ambulance workers in the Otjozondjupa Region have stopped working overtime, and as a result, residents are forced to rely on their own resources for these services.Workers say they have not been paid overtime for the last three months of 2022 and are calling on the ministry to address the matter urgently.PSUN further accused the ministry of failing to plan and being irresponsible."It clearly has a planning deficit of critical proportions, and this is highly irresponsible given the resources at their disposal."The union has asked the Office of the Prime Minister to intercede and help solve the problem.Processes delayThe ministry&#039;s spokesperson, Walters Kamaya, confirmed that ECPs haven&#039;t received overtime and said it&#039;s because the approvals are taking longer than anticipated."The full process has to be considered. The Erongo Region received approval yesterday morning," Kamaya said.At the time, the ministry was unable to provide an exact time for other regions&#039; approvals.
