An outbreak of African horse sickness has been confirmed by the directorate of veterinary services.
“So far, a total of 25 cases have been confirmed in the districts of Otjinene, Windhoek, Okahandja, Omaruru, Gobabis and Mariental,” said acting chief veterinary officer Dr Johannes Shoopala yesterday.
African horse sickness is an infectious but noncontagious viral disease. Common signs of the disease include coughing, froth from the nose, enlarged lymph nodes, fever and sudden death. Mortality may reach 70%.
