Wakudumo warns regional government

In the wake of being accused of meddling in administrative issues, Kavango East governor Bonifatius Wakudumo says as long as he remains the political head of the region he will ensure that officials who are not performing as required will be held accountable.Wakudumo was speaking at an event in Rundu on Friday where he did not mince his words about those who view his involvement in administrative matters as interference.All this emanated from a three-year, multimillion-dollar tender advertised in December last year by the Kavango East Regional Council for sewage and refuse removal from government buildings in the region.It was detected that some of the services as listed in the tender documents were not a true reflection of what is on the ground.Wakudumo compiled a list of irregularities that he had detected and presented it to the regional council and demanded that the tender be cancelled.Not interferingHe used Friday’s event as an opportunity to lash out at those who accused him of interfering.“I am representing the government; there is no way you will tell me that the governor is interfering. I am not interfering but I am directing to make sure that you are doing the correct work,” Wakudumo remarked.“The government and the president whom I represent are elected by the electorate and as regional head it is my responsibility to make sure no matter what position you hold in administration, my responsibility is to make sure that you comply and do the work correctly,“I cannot sit in my office and you tell me that a school has a hostel and I know that school does not have a hostel and you pay a contractor to deliver services to that school and as a regional governor you expect me to sit in my office and allow you to do your administrative work."I cannot allow that. Not in my tenure as a regional governor. I will not allow that. Government should spend money for services rendered. I am not threatening anyone. I will make sure that you technocrats do your work,” he said.kenya@namibiansun.com
