SHORT NEWS: City battles rising sewer blockages amid public outcry
The City of Windhoek has raised alarm over a surge in sewer blockages across the capital, blaming the crisis on the improper disposal of waste into the city’s drainage system.
Council workers have removed tyres, nappies, spoons, car parts, cow heads, clothing, bricks, and even blankets from sewer lines. City spokesperson Lydia Amutenya said the municipality spent close to N$700 000 to unblock a single, long drainage system. The municipality also appealed to residents to report vandalism, illegal dumping, or stolen manhole covers through the Customer Contact Centre (061 290 3777) or by emailing [email protected]
