President retains ex-minister ǁHoebes as advisor
President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has appointed former minister in the presidency Christine ǁHoebes as her special advisor on presidential affairs.
The appointment, confirmed yesterday by presidential press secretary Alfredo Hengari, ends weeks of speculation about ǁHoebes' future in the Nandi-Ndaitwah administration.
ǁHoebes is among several former ministers who did not return to parliament or Cabinet following the recent transition.
The fate of current presidential advisors remains unknown, with sources claiming that they had until last week to learn whether they will be retained or not. One of them, Inge Zaamwani, is tipped to become the new minister of agriculture, fisheries, water and land reform, replacing Mac Hengari, who was sacked last week amid bribery allegations. The former Namdeb CEO is the advisor on constitutional affairs and private sector interface.
ǁHoebes started on her political path at the age of 23, when she was elected councillor of Witvlei. She later became chairperson of the village council and was, at the time, the youngest mayor in Namibia.
Her national political career began in 2015 when she was appointed deputy minister of presidential affairs. During a Cabinet reshuffle in February 2018, she was reassigned to the Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation, continuing in a deputy ministerial role. On 21 March 2020, ǁHoebes returned to the presidency, this time serving as minister of presidential affairs.
