Over 800 plots for Oshana residents

In a mission to avail urban and low-cost housing, three local authorities in northern Namibia have serviced and allocated 863 plots to Oshana Region residents.Governor Elia Irimari recently announced – during his state of the region address - that Ongwediva, Ondangwa and Oshakati serviced the plots during the 2022/2023 financial year. “The increasing pace of rural-urban migration continues to escalate the demand for residential and business properties in urban areas in the region. We are determined to bring services to our people,” he said.During the reporting period, local authorities in the region planned and established new townships in order to fast-track urban land delivery, he said.At the moment, a total of eight townships are being established in the region, Irimari added.In addition, surveying is underway for 275 plots at Efidi Lomulunga Extension 6 in Ongwediva, while planning is in progress for 221 plots at Onawa Proper, and 137 at Onawa Extension 1. In Oshakati, 1 035 plots at Ehenye Extension 11, Onawa and Evululuko are being serviced, while servicing is underway for 102 and 600 plots at Ondangwa’s Extension 28 and Omashaka respectively. The urban ministry allocated N$2.5 million to the Oshana regional council for rural development programmes, Irimari said.“During the year under review, the council implemented three programmes of rural sanitation, food and cash for works, and microfinance.”Water for farmers at OpononaAccording to the governor, NamWater has initiated the pumping of water into the Oponona water stream to address the water challenges of farmers who live in the area. He said the water utility has started pumping water from Olushandja to grazing areas facing water shortages. “In response to the drought situation characterised by low and sporadic rainfall in the region, the regional councils of Oshana, Oshikoto and Omusati have collaborated to address the water scarcity in grazing areas,” he said. This while Ohangwena has not been spared by the effects of the drought, and livestock farmers have started seeking grazing opportunities in Angola. Irimari further revealed that Oshana regional council is in the process of constructing 130 toilets at a cost of N$2.1 million.The project has employed 92 young people from the region, he added.tuyeimo@namibiansun.com
