Ohangwena improves on housing delivery

In an effort to address a housing shortage in the region, Eenhana town council serviced 420 low-cost plots with electricity at Ekolola to the tune of N$5.6 million during the financial year 2021/22.Ohangwena governor Walde Ndevashiya said a total of 72 housing projects were completed through public-private partnerships during the period under review to address the housing backlog. He made the remarks during his state of the region address (SORA) last week at Eenhana.Ndevashiya said 30 houses were constructed at Omhito extension six by Eenhana United Construction, at a cost of N$27 million, and 17 houses were constructed at Eenhana extension six, by Formosa Islands to the value of N$12.4 million.Another 14 houses were constructed at Omhito Proper by the Eenhana town council in partnership with the Development Bank of Namibia Project, to the value of N$9.1 million and eight houses were constructed at Omhito Extension two, and three, by Greywall Properties, to the tune of N$3.8 million.The governor said the number of homes constructed in Eenhana during the period between June 2021 to May 2022 totalled 78 houses, with a combined value of about N$54 530 000.Ongha proclaimedIn addition, another 380 plots will be allocated to Ekolola, he said, adding that Ongha has recently been proclaimed a settlement, where a total of 2 424 plots are currently being surveyed, valued at N$3 million.“During the 2021/2022 financial year, the region received 112 applications for resettlement purposes and only one applicant was successfully resettled,” he said. The governor said this is cause for concern to the regional leadership, as the number of applicants in need of resettlement keeps rising every year. He said the region is working around the clock to resolve the issue of resettlement and to ensure more people benefit from government projects.Ndevashiya said the region has also registered 1 355 customary land rights.Furthermore, 104 plots have been fully serviced with complete sewer reticulation at Ohangwena Proper and 31 business plots were serviced with sewer reticulation.A total of 204 plots were fully serviced at Engela-Omafo extension three.He said the Helao Nafidi town council has implemented six infrastructure projects ranging from sewerage reticulations, roads upgrading to bitumen and maintenance of gravel roads to the tune of N$15.2 million.tuyeimo@namibiansun.com
