Home affairs campaign issues 24 000 birth, ID papers
The home affairs ministry's campaign to issue national identification documents across all regions of the country has successfully registered over 24 000 identification documents (IDs) and birth certificates to date.
The registration drive commenced on 5 February and is scheduled to conclude 30 July.
According to ministry spokesperson Margaret Kalo, out of the 24 000 documents completed, a total of 9 881 birth certificates and 14 511 national identification documents were issued.
“The ministry strongly encourages citizens across all 14 regions who do not have national documents or have lost documents to avail themselves of the mass registration opportunities to register for essential national documents,” she said.
Kalo said the registration campaign focuses on birth registration for persons of all ages, applications for duplicate birth certificates, applications for identity documents and applications for duplicate identity documents.
Requirements
Requirements for birth registration include proof of birth, which can be obtained from the hospital where a mother gave birth or from a person who witnessed the birth in the case where the child being registered was delivered at home.
Parents’ national documents are also required.
If a parent is not present at the registration and wishes to be registered on the birth certificate of a child, a declaration and ID copy have to be provided.
“If you are applying for birth certificates for the first time, you will not pay. However, for duplicate birth certificates, you will be charged a fee of N$100, which increases with N$100 for every duplicate issued,” Kalo said.
Be ready
To apply for an identity document, a person must be a Namibian citizen or permanent resident holder and be 16 years of age or older.
An original Namibian birth certificate and a certified copy of the birth certificate, or certified copies of citizenship and permanent resident permit certificates, must be presented. Fingerprints and images will be taken by officials at the mobile registration centre.
“Those applying for IDs for the first time will not pay. However, for a duplicate ID, the fee is N$150, which increases by the same amount for every duplicate ID issued,” Kalo explained.
“In adherence to its commitment to excellence in service delivery, the ministry is dedicated to ensuring that it provides high-quality services to the people it serves,” Kalo said.
