Standard Bank injects N$2.5 million into revived Top 8 Cup

The 2026 Standard Bank Top 8 Cup was officially launched in Windhoek, marking the highly anticipated return of one of Namibia’s premier domestic football competitions.Hosted at Standard Bank’s head office in Kleine Kuppe, the launch brought together key football stakeholders, corporate partners and government representatives to celebrate the revival of the tournament, underlining its importance to the growth of the local game.Standard Bank Namibia confirmed a total sponsorship of N$2.5 million, reinforcing its commitment to football development in the country. The competition will feature the top eight teams from the Namibia Premier Football League at the end of the current season.The tournament will be staged across multiple venues, starting in Swakopmund, moving to Oshakati, and culminating in the final in Windhoek, offering fans across the country an opportunity to experience high-level domestic football.Speaking at the launch, Standard Bank Namibia Chief Executive Erwin Tjipuka emphasised the broader impact of the competition.“Football is more than a game, it is a catalyst for growth, unity and opportunity,” he said, highlighting the bank’s vision of using sport to bring communities together and create meaningful opportunities.Standard Bank’s Head of Transactional Products and Services, Socrates Diaz, described the launch as a celebration of “partnership, progress and passion”, commending the efforts of clubs who will compete in the tournament and the supporters who continue to drive the spirit of Namibian football.The Top 8 Cup will kick off immediately after the conclusion of the domestic league season, serving as a reward for consistency and excellence among the country’s top-performing clubs.In terms of prize money, the champions will walk away with N$600,000, while the runners-up will receive N$300,000. The losing semi-finalists will each earn N$100,000, and all participating teams will benefit from a N$50,000 preparation grant.Individual excellence will also be recognised, with awards for Player of the Match in every game, as well as honours for Player of the Tournament, Top Goalscorer, and Best Goalkeeper.With significant financial backing, nationwide reach and the promise of high-quality competition, the return of the Standard Bank Top 8 Cup is set to inject fresh excitement into Namibian football and further strengthen the bond between the sport and its supporters.
