LEGAL CLERK Alina Shikongo

Driven by a passion for history and a desire to make a meaningful impact, 24-year-old legal clerk Alina Shikongo is committed to promoting diversity, inclusivity and empowerment. Her journey has taught her the value of empathy and cultural sensitivity when addressing legal challenges and serving the community.

Reflecting on her studies, Shikongo highlighted the importance of thorough research and attention to detail. “Every case or legal judgment relies on accurate interpretation and application of statutes, cases and regulations,” she said.

Her internship at the Office of the Prosecutor-General was pivotal, equipping her with critical thinking skills and a firm grasp of legal principles. Now, as a legal clerk, she applies those lessons to real-life situations.

A strong advocate for women’s rights and gender equality, Shikongo is especially passionate about addressing gender-based violence. “Women and girls often face abuse that violates their rights and perpetuates cycles of trauma. I am committed to supporting survivors and strengthening legal protections,” she said.

Balancing a demanding academic workload with personal responsibilities was one of her biggest challenges. To manage, she adopted a structured schedule, prioritised tasks, joined study groups and sought support from mentors.

Shikongo draws inspiration from her great-uncle, former minister Ben Amathila. “His role in the liberation movement motivates me to stand for fairness and justice.”

She believes that a major issue facing Namibian law students is the lack of practical experience. Her proudest achievement to date is graduating with an honours degree in law from the University of Namibia.
