A humanitarian is an individual or organisation motivated to promote the welfare, wellbeing and rights of people impacted by various crises, conflicts, natural disasters, poverty, or other types of struggles.
Maria Festus, who was born and raised in Omaalala village, is the founder of a charity soup kitchen and the #KeepAGirlinSchool project. She launched the feeding programme in 2019.
She said serving people is a calling. "Giving brings me so much joy."
"Growing up in Havana's dirt streets, I was fortunate to have all I needed, but I've seen so many children go to bed hungry, so I took it upon myself to start something tiny with what little I had," she added.
Currently, the soup kitchen provides food every Saturday to needy children, as it lacks the financial means to do so every day.
