Feeding other people with Namibia's food makes no sense - Ithete
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Industry, Mines and Energy, Natangwe Ithete, said taking food from Namibia and feeding other people does not make sense.
Speaking during the official inauguration of a fish shop at Onankali village last week, Ithete said Namibians are left to starve.
His comments came after the Namibia Fish Consumption Promotion Trust CEO, Victor Pea, had said that some fish shops were selling other items.
Pea said that small businesses have a challenge in directly linking with suppliers.
According to Ithete, Namibia has a lot of empty fish shops because those who catch the fish export it.
"Taking food from our country and feeding other people. Does it make sense?” Ithete asked. “Taking food from our sea and feeding other nations is why our shops are empty. Must we allow things like that?"
Ithete said the issue will be addressed with no mercy because local fish businesses cannot access supplies when the resource is well-marketed in foreign countries.
"Truth speaking, we will fix it. We will not allow fish from our country to feed people from other countries while our people are hungry. We are going to rectify it. I heard the message very clearly and take it very seriously,” Ithete vowed.
The Onankali Fish Shop will serve as the Namibia Fish Consumption Promotion Trust (NFCPT) agent.
