‘My F*k, Marelize’ is finally here!

Iréne-Mari van der Walt
Who hasn’t seen it? The video of Marelize Horn learning to ride a bike on a sports field, only to crash into a rugby post? Funny enough on its own – but it was her mother’s now-iconic reaction behind the camera, blurting out the unforgettable “My f*k, Marelize,” that made the clip truly famous. Within a short time, it went viral across Namibia and South Africa.

The clip inspired South African director Zandré Coetzer to tell the “story in front of the rugby post.” From this came the idea for a feature film that not only revisits the origins of the viral moment but also develops an original, heartfelt and humorous narrative. In September 2024, the cast travelled to Namibia with a South African production team, working alongside a local film crew on location.

The project was produced by several partners, including the Namibian production company Joe Vision Production, whose producers Joel and Sophie Haikali contributed their expertise. South African production companies were also involved, resulting in a collaboration that connects the film culture of both countries and sets new standards for international collaborations in the region.

A Namibian story

Last Wednesday, "My F*k Marelize" celebrated its international premiere in Cape Town, and on Wednesday, the homecoming premiere followed in Windhoek.

Since yesterday, the film has been shown in Namibian and South African cinemas, in Afrikaans with English subtitles.

Since its premiere, the film has won three awards at the Silwerskermfees: Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress and Audience Choice Award.

"My F*k Marelize" shows how a brief viral moment becomes a story that is funny, heartfelt, and deeply rooted in Namibia. The film combines local culture with an international team, bringing a slice of Namibian everyday life to the big screen.
