Renewable energy gets N$400m boost

Elizabeth Joseph
Standard Bank Namibia has raised N$400 million for various renewable energy projects.

The bank's head of business and public sector Gerhard Mukuahima announced this at a ministry of environment, forestry and tourism ceremony where its longest-serving field workers were awarded.

"Earlier this year, we successfully raised N$400 million worth of funding through the insurance of our green bond.

These funds will finance an array of renewable energy projects in the country," he said.

Mukuahima added that the bank is the ministry's financial service provider, and several of its donor-funded projects bank with them.

Last week, the ministry received - among other donations - 10 off-road vehicles and top-class equipment for the fight against poaching. This donation, from the KfW Development Bank of Germany, is valued at N$21.7 million.

Standard Bank also donated a Toyota Land Cruiser to this cause.

Resilience

During the ceremony, ministry executive director Teofilus Nghitila, on behalf of minister Pohamba Shifeta, applauded the resilience of employees in the field.

"While these awards recognise individual staff members, there are more than 1 000 field staff members who are all appreciated.

“We often forget that staff members in the field put their lives on the line every day. They confront wildlife conservation challenges and operate in harsh environmental conditions," he said.

Shifeta further promised field staff that the ministry is committed to improving their working and living standards.
