The ministry of industries, mines and energy has confirmed an earthquake measuring 4.9 on the local magnitude scale (also known as the Richter scale), cautioning those in the area to anticipate further seismological activity. According to a media release by the deputy executive director for the Geological Survey of Namibia, Gloria Simubali, the earthquake was recorded in the Kamanjab vicinity yesterday, 21 October, at 22:34.

Six seismic stations of the Namibian Seismological Network – namely Windhoek, Kamanjab, Rundu, Opuwo, Aus and Ariamsvlei – recorded the event with two regional seismic stations of the South African Seismological network also noting seismological activity.

The aftershock of the earthquake was recorded at 3.2 on the local magnitude scale this morning at 08:08. In case of further aftershocks, the ministry advises individuals to go outside if they find themselves indoors during earthquakes or aftershocks or alternatively seek refuge under a table. If you are outdoors, seek a clear area that is far away from trees, buildings or power lines. Stay away from windows and be careful of falling objects.
