KHORIXAS CELEBRATES ELEPHANTS
KHORIXAS CELEBRATES ELEPHANTS: World Elephant Day was celebrated in Khorixas on Tuesday by the elephant conservation organisation Elephant Human Relations Aid (EHRA), together with community members and learners, through a public awareness walk. In the Kunene region, human-elephant conflict remains a major challenge, but messages were shared about how people can live peacefully alongside elephants.
According to the BBC, this year's World Elephant Day, commemorated on 12 August each year, spotlighted the role of the matriarch elephant.
A matriarch elephant is the leader of the elephant family or herd. She is the oldest, most dominant female.
Adult females work together to protect and bring up the babies, or calves. A family can range in size from three elephants to as many as 25, the BBC reported.
