Henties Bay unites for coastal clean-up

Over 250 volunteers took to the shores of Henties Bay for a large-scale beach clean-up campaign last weekend, collecting 125 bags of litter in a collaborative effort to promote environmental responsibility and civic pride.

The initiative was spearheaded by the Hanganeni Fishing Association (Hafa) in partnership with the Henties Bay municipality.

The clean-up day drew broad community involvement, with participants from the National Youth Service (NYS), the Henties Bay Fire Brigade and the Lions Club of Henties Bay joining hands with residents and local organisations.

Jacky Kaputu, a tourism intern at the municipality, described the event as a powerful demonstration of community spirit.

“The turnout was incredible. People came out with energy and purpose,” she said. “This was about more than just picking up litter – it showed that the people of Henties Bay are committed to protecting their coastline.”

Positive outlook

The day began with formal remarks by Henties Bay mayor Lewies Vermaak, followed by a march to the beach led by NYS drummers and accompanied by an official escort from the fire brigade. Volunteers of all ages worked along the beach collecting waste, with the municipality providing gloves and bags.

Hafa sponsored refreshments for all participants, and the Lions Club’s involvement further underscored the day’s collaborative nature.

“The feedback we received was overwhelmingly positive,” Kaputu said. “We hope to make this a recurring initiative and get even more people involved next time.”
