Draft report on KAZA elephant survey expected early 2023
News in short
An aerial elephant survey of the Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA TFCA) was completed at the end of November, with the last flights taking place in Namibia’s Zambezi Region.
According to the KAZA TFCA secretariat, it also included a survey of south-eastern Angola and Sioma Ngwezi National Park in Zambia to complete the count of a game management area there.
With flights completed, the project now moves towards the data analysis phase.
Plans are to complete a preliminary analysis in November/December and finalise a draft report on the survey findings in February/March 2023, followed by a peer review.
The survey aims to determine the numbers and seasonal distribution of elephants, elephant carcasses and other large herbivores, and is a substantial undertaking and coordinated effort of the governments of Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
