Another black rhino poached at Omaruru
No arrests so far in connection with the cases
A third rhino has been found dead and dehorned in the Omaruru district this month, as police investigate a series of poaching incidents.
A bull black rhino has been found dead and dehorned on a custodian farm in the Omaruru district, the third rhino poaching incident reported in the area in recent weeks.
According to Erongo police senior inspector Judith Shomongula, the case is being investigated under the Nature Conservation Ordinance as it involves the illegal hunting of a specially protected game species and theft of rhino horns.
Police said the incident occurred sometime between December 2024 and 16 October this year. The suspects allegedly entered the farm, shot the rhino bull in the head with an unknown firearm, and removed its horns using a sharp object.
The decomposed carcass was discovered recently.
No arrests have been made and investigations are continuing.
This follows two earlier poaching cases reported at a farm in the Omaruru district last month. In those incidents, a female black rhinoceros and a female white rhinoceros were found killed and dehorned between 3 and 11 October. Both carcasses were discovered with ballistic evidence at the scene, but no suspects have been apprehended to date.
