Energy minister Natangwe Ithete yesterday launched new household electrification projects in Kongola in the Zambezi region.

Ithete said in Zambezi, out of more than 37 000 households, only about 13 500 are connected to the grid.

The projects launched yesterday included new connections in Kongola, Bukalo and Nampengu, as well as electricity for schools in Old Masokotwani, Kahunikwa, Nsundwa, Ikaba and Malal Nkanga. Ithete said solar systems are planned for remote areas where homes are spread out.

“Electricity is not a luxury; it is something that makes schools, clinics and businesses work. Whether it comes from the main grid or from solar, what matters is that people get the service,” he said.

The electrification programme continues today in Kavango West, where 195 households in Nkurenkuru will be connected. In addition, Sikondo village will see 80 households benefiting.

The minister called on communities to work together, saying development belongs to everyone. “When the light shines, it shines for all. This is our shared future."
