School welcomes much-needed furniture donation
Ongandjera chief Johannes Mupiya has donated 55 chairs and 55 desks to Epoko Combined School in the Omusati Region following a Namibian Sun exposé showing learners sitting on bare floors during classes and exams.
Namibian Sun reported at the time that some learners brought chairs from home to sit comfortably during lessons.
The school is located in the Okalongo constituency, where the official handover took place earlier this week.
Collective effort
The donation by Mupiya was made through the Uukwandongo Trust Fund, which purchased 50 chairs and 50 desks worth N$53 290, while Shimupuleni Trust, a furniture producer, donated five chairs and five desks valued at N$5 392.
Mupiya emphasised that while Epoko Combined School is a government school, it should be a collective effort from all Namibians to address challenges faced by schools.
“Even if it is a government school that is faced with a challenge, we are the government."
The Uukwandongo Trust Fund has been assisting many schools with much-needed items, including 10 San communities in the Ongandjera jurisdiction.
Mupiya urged learners to take their education seriously.
“We are getting old, and you are the leaders of tomorrow. Hence you must study hard and become the next doctors, engineers, ministers and pilots," he said.
“We will help you, just like we did today, to have a conducive environment to study in," he vowed.
During the handover, it was revealed that the school, which has 528 learners, still requires 133 desks and 43 chairs.
