Ohangwena closes third school due to flood

The directorate of education, arts and culture in the Ohangwena Region has suspended teaching at Elao Primary School in the Oshikango constituency.

This is the third school to be closed in the region after Onghala Combined School and Shingunguma Primary School were closed last week due to rising floodwater in the area. With Elao’s 669, this brings the total number of learners who have been sent home to over 1 000.

Ohangwena education director Isak Hamatwi confirmed the closure to Namibia Sun, adding that the water surrounding the school is deep and it is dangerous, especially for younger children.

He said they will continue to monitor the areas around the schools that have been temporarily closed.

According to him, teachers will have to come up with compensatory lessons to make up for this lost time.

“Learners are now at home and they are losing out. The coming holiday might not be the same,” he said.

Hamatwi added that nothing can be done as they cannot allow learners to wade through deep water as they might lose their lives.
