Rukonga Vision School principal Peter Kudumo says the school’s success is largely thanks to the dedication of both teachers and learners, who go above and beyond to maintain its reputation as one of the country’s leading academic institutions.

Located in Divundu, Kavango East, Rukonga Vision School has been recognised for several years as one of Namibia’s top-performing government schools.

It was the highest-ranked government school in the 2024 NSSCAS results, holding onto the number one spot for a second year running, after also topping the rankings in 2023.

In an interview with Namibian Sun last week, Kudumo – who became the school’s principal in January – said he has been impressed by the work ethic and discipline of both teachers and pupils during his first months in office.

“I’m happy with the conduct of all the learners and the staff. The teaching staff are hard-working and committed to the programmes of the school, and the learners have been very supportive. Whenever we call them to come for school activities, they always respond positively,” he said.

'Love and commitment'

He explained that the school’s success is rooted in a shared understanding of what it takes to achieve academic excellence.

“Rukonga Vision School is a demanding school. It requires hard-working and committed staff members who are able to go the extra mile and work under pressure," he said.

"We expect the same from the learners. We want learners who are serious and committed to their studies,” Kudumo added.

He pointed out that teachers voluntarily give lessons outside school hours, without being compelled to do so.

“There’s no timetable that forces teachers to come at those times – it’s the love and commitment they have for the learners and the school that drives them to sacrifice their own time,” he added.

Learners have also embraced the school’s rigorous academic culture, he added.

“They understand that it’s for their own benefit. When we call them to come for evening or weekend study sessions, they don’t complain. They show up and participate. Our goal – both as learners and teachers – is to improve the school’s results.”

Holistic approach

Grade 12 learner Dennis Ngarizemo said the school creates an environment where students can thrive.

“I’ve learned a lot here, not just academically but also discipline and self-motivation. The teachers really care about us, and you can see it in how much time they put into helping us,” he said.

Another learner, Mia Gariseb, echoed that sentiment: “This school pushes you to be your best. It’s not easy, but it’s worth it. We support each other, and the teachers are always there to help us succeed.”
