Windhoek launches disaster risk management framework
Windhoek mayor Sade Gawanas has announced that the City of Windhoek's framework to mitigate risks and disasters is complete and accessible to the public on its website.
In light of the annual commemoration of International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, Gawanas highlighted the need for such actions on all levels.
The first official meeting of the risk management committee was held on 21 September and focused on issues such as school safety.
"In May this year, the council approved the reviewed disaster risk management plan following consultations with all departments and external key stakeholders.
"We assist schools to set up emergency preparedness plans and raise awareness of the disaster risk management discipline," she said.
More vulnerable
In his keynote address, delivered by Shivute Indongo, deputy executive director of the prime minister's office, I-Ben Nashandi said "households exposed to risks and hazards should take action to reduce the impact and prepare for effective and responsive recoveries.
"Local authorities need to mitigate the effects of disasters, especially in informal settlements, where the most vulnerable members of society live.
"Events like this should be at a national level and not just at a grassroots level," he said.
