High flood risk flagged for early 2026
SHORT NEWS
The risk of flooding in parts of Namibia has risen sharply after the Namibian Meteorological Services forecast above-normal rainfall between January and March 2026.
The agriculture, fisheries, water and land reform ministry’s water affairs division said the latest seasonal outlook points to increased rainfall during the peak of the rainy season.
Flooding is expected in low-lying areas, river basins and urban centres with inadequate drainage infrastructure. Communities have been urged to ensure that at-risk areas are adequately prepared to minimise safety risks.
Regions identified as particularly vulnerable include the Zambezi region, which experiences regular flooding due to its proximity to the Zambezi River; Kavango East and Kavango West, where flooding is often driven by the Kavango River and flat terrain; and the Cuvelai–Etosha Basin – covering Oshana, Ohangwena, Omusati and Oshikoto – where seasonal flooding is linked to the oshana system.
