PROUD CITIZEN: A South African delegate flaunts her country's national colours before ascending the Great Wall of China. The Great Wall of China was built over centuries by China’s emperors to protect their territory. According to a five-year archaeological survey in 2012, the total length of the Great Wall in various dynasties is 21 196.18 kilometres, about half the perimeter of the equator.
