Weekend marred by troubling spate of deaths, rapes
The Namibian police's weekend crime report shows that a 10-year-old boy was fatally run over at 15:58 on Friday at Oshamakaka village in the King Nehale area when a 46-year-old truck driver reversed while assisting with electricity wiring in the village.
The child had been sleeping under a tree. He died on the spot. Police confirmed that the driver is cooperating with investigators.
Earlier that same day, at 12:19, two people were killed on the C35 road between Werda and Omakange in the Kunene and Omusati regions when a white Isuzu double cab overturned after the driver allegedly lost control on a sharp curve.
Five passengers were thrown from the vehicle; two died instantly, and four others, including the driver, were seriously injured. Their next of kin have not yet been informed.
In Windhoek’s Sam Nujoma Drive, a collision at the Rocky Crest–Khomasdal traffic lights at 19:50 on Friday left Lukas Nangolo (50) and George Shiluwa (38) dead when a private vehicle crashed into a government-registered car, which then struck an Amarok. Police have opened a case for reckless and negligent driving.
In Ndiyona, Kavango East, Muyenga Lukas (25) died at 01:30 on Sunday, 30 November, after he was hit by a truck that fled the scene.
Four suicides
The police also reported a series of suicides.
In Kupferberg, near Windhoek, the body of 49-year-old tour company employee Hofeni Shoombe was discovered inside a VW Kombi on Friday, 28 November, after he had taken his own life.
In Swakopmund, Mondesa, Xoagub Riomario Domingo (29) also died by suicide later that morning.
In Keetmanshoop on Saturday, 29 November, Barnice Richardine Coetzee (35) was found after taking her own life.
And in Lüderitz on Saturday morning, a 38-year-old man detained on a domestic-violence charge was found dead in his cell after having taken his own life.
Violent incidents
In Ncuncuni constituency, a 72-year-old man was arrested on Saturday at 11:00 after allegedly raping his disabled 16-year-old stepdaughter, while in Bunya, Kavango West, a 34-year-old man was arrested at 01:00 on Saturday for allegedly dragging a 19-year-old woman to his room and raping her.
A string of burglaries and thefts was reported nationwide, including a high-value break-in at the Bush Baby shop in Katima Mulilo at 08:00 on Saturday, where N$59 089 in cash was stolen after suspects cut through the roof and disabled the alarm cables.
In Swakopmund, three bags containing passports, licences, clothes and 4 000 euros and US$8 000 in cash were snatched from a vehicle at 08:20 on Friday.
And in Henties Bay, items valued at over N$50 000 were stolen during a housebreaking between 00:00 and 06:00 on Saturday.
