Unlicensed teen fled car accident scene, police say

Last weekend's police crime report has revealed a series of disturbing incidents across Namibia, including a case in Maltahöhe where a seven-year-old boy fell from the back of a moving bakkie while the driver, an 18-year-old without a licence, sped off without stopping.

According to Namibian Police spokesperson Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi, the accident happened on Friday between 12:00 and 13:00 in Blikkiesdorp. The teenage driver allegedly recklessly drove an unregistered and unlicensed bakkie, causing a child standing in the loading box to fall and sustain injuries.

“It is reported that the driver continued driving without stopping and failed to ascertain the nature of injuries sustained by the passenger after the accident,” Shikwambi confirmed. The suspect was arrested, and police investigations continue.

Murder, rape and robbery

In Mariental’s Aimablaagte location, 27-year-old Jeffrey Bartman was fatally stabbed in the chest during a confrontation in the early hours of Saturday. Police confirmed a suspect has been arrested.

Two rape cases involving intellectually disabled women were reported in Omuthiya and Okatope, one involving a 70-year-old suspect who remains at large.

In Walvis Bay, a violent housebreaking and robbery was reported. Police say a woman was assaulted, tied up, and robbed of goods worth N$356 000, including firearms, jewellery and electronics.

Fatalities and inquests

The weekend was also marked by several fatal accidents, police reported.

In Ongwediva, 66-year-old Hafeni Lukas died after his vehicle overturned along Omagongati gravel road. In Oshakati, a head-on collision killed 61-year-old Ambunda Jacob Ipinge, while another accident claimed the life of Gabriel Tuhalukeni when a double cab overturned on the Oshakati–Okatana road.

Another fatality was recorded in Katutura on Sunday when Edward Simbo (52) burned to death after his shack caught fire while he was cooking.

Police also recorded two tragic drownings: a 31-year-old Angolan man in Eheke who slipped into a pond after helping rescue a cow, and an 11-month-old child who drowned in a water bucket in Ongwediva.
