Toddler rescued after falling into pit latrine
A one-year, 10-month-old toddler was rescued on Tuesday evening after falling into a pit latrine at Ohaushombo Village in the Ongwediva area.
Oshana crime investigations coordinator Deputy Commissioner Fredrick Ndjadila said the toddler slipped and fell into an uncovered pit latrine while playing in a field near her home with other children.
Ndjadila said the other children quickly alerted nearby adults, who immediately contacted the Ongwediva Police Station. Emergency services, including a state ambulance, were dispatched to the scene.
“Fortunately, the pit was not deep, and the child was successfully rescued by responding officers from Ongwediva charge office and members of the criminal investigation unit,” Ndjadila said.
The child was transported to Oshakati State Hospital, where she received medical treatment. She has since been discharged and is recovering at home.
Ndjadila urged residents to secure open pits and other hazardous areas to prevent similar incidents.
