Taxi driver rapes woman on her way home from church

Tuyeimo Haidula
A 31-year-old woman is the latest rape victim in Oshana Region after she was reportedly attacked and raped by a taxi driver on her way from church to Omatando village in Ongwediva on Sunday night.

Police said the incident occurred around 21:00 when the woman was returning from Pastor Shoombe's Church. Oshana police crime investigation coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Frederick Ndjadila, reported that the victim flagged down a white taxi without a rear number plate and requested to be taken to Oshakati.

The woman reported that the taxi driver told her he needed to pick up two more passengers at Omatando. However, he then drove her to a field, stopped the car, and told her that he was not actually going to pick up any passengers; he only wanted to talk to her and take her to his place.

“The victim asked him if he knew her, then the driver stood up from his seat and went to the back seat where the victim was seated. He removed the short trouser he was wearing, then he forcefully undressed the victim," Ndjadila said.

He threatened that he would stab her with a knife if she screamed for help.

Multiple sexual assaults

The suspect raped her multiple times and did not use a condom.

“When he finished, he ordered the victim to get out of his car, and then the victim jumped out of his car,” he said.

The suspect is unknown and no arrest has been made so far while police continue to investigate the case.

In a separate incident, a three-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by her 18-year-old cousin at Olushika in the area of Ondangwa. Ndjadila said the assault, which reportedly took place on Sunday, 11 August, was only recently reported to the police.

“It is alleged that the victim was left with a cousin at the time, when the suspect undressed her trousers and then inserted his fingers in her vagina,” he said.

Ndjadila said the three-year-old told her grandmother about the assault, but the incident was only reported to authorities at a later stage by the victim's 29-year-old mother.
