Police are investigating a string of weekend crimes across Namibia, including the discovery of buried drought-relief food near Otavi and a deadly knife fight over cigarettes.

Police Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi stated that the discovery was made on Friday, 15 August, when community members alerted the authorities after coming across the suspected drought-relief tinned food along the gravel road leading to Gabus Lodge.

“The discovery was further reported to the Regional Council Office, and a representative was sent to the scene for assessment,” she said.

“The cans were severely decomposed and rotten,” she added.

The case was part of a series of incidents reported to police over the weekend, according to the latest police incident report.

In the Otjozondjupa region, a man was reportedly stabbed to death following an argument over cigarettes while travelling on the back of a bakkie.

“The suspect was arrested and the murder weapon seized,” Shikwambi said.

Fraud, theft, robberies and drugs

A suspected fraud case was reported in Ondangwa, where a 64-year-old woman lost N$25 450 after a caller posing as a Namibia Revenue Agency employee convinced her to provide her ATM card details.

In Klein Windhoek, a suspect threatened a man with a panga and stole phones, an iPad, and cash worth N$23 600. In a Wanaheda case, a police detective was attacked by three suspects with a panga but managed to fire warning shots. Two suspects were later arrested.

In Oshivelo, three men were arrested for allegedly attempting to register one of them as a voter using another person’s birth certificate.

In Walvis Bay, police said unknown suspects cut ten transformers from NamWater boreholes and stole copper wires valued at more than N$660 000.

In the Oniipa constituency, a Toyota Corolla was stolen from a yard, while in Ongwediva, a laptop was taken during a break-in at the environment and tourism offices.

Police also made several drug-related arrests.

“A 25-year-old man was arrested in Ondangwa with 1 015 grams of cannabis valued at N$50 750, and a 26-year-old in Otjiwarongo with 710 grams,” Shikwambi said.

In Oshakati, a 40-year-old was arrested after selling suspected cocaine to an undercover officer.

In Kamanjab, a security guard was arrested after CCTV footage showed him hiding a parcel later found to contain cannabis.
