Spike in violent crime, tragedies over first July weekend

Namibia experienced a surge in violent crimes and tragic incidents over the past weekend, according to the Namibian Police’s weekend crime report released yesterday. The cases

Two violent robberies rocked the capital on Friday. In the early morning, four armed suspects stormed a textile shop in Chinatown, Katutura, where three people were asleep. The robbers held them at gunpoint and fled with cash, jewellery, a pistol, and ammunition - valued at over N$680,000.

Later that evening, a house in Hochland Park was targeted. Armed intruders tied up two occupants inside a flat, locking them in the bathroom before making off with electronics, clothing, and other valuables worth N$122,400.

In Otjomuise, a 14-year-old boy died by suicide shortly after returning from an errand. In a separate case in Windhoek North, a 51-year-old man collapsed and was found dead in a guesthouse shower. Both incidents are under inquest.

In Rundu, a 40-year-old woman was allegedly raped on her way home from a bar in the early hours of Saturday. The suspect is still at large.

In the Otjimuhaka area, police arrested a 41-year-old man for allegedly hunting a specially protected black-faced impala using a wire trap. In Mariental, three men were caught attempting to sell an elephant tusk at a shopping centre. One suspect was shot during the arrest and is currently hospitalised.

Road incidents and vehicle offences

A number of vehicle-related offences were recorded across the country. In Otavi, a man was arrested for driving under the influence, with an alcohol reading nearly three times the legal limit. In Oranjemund, reckless driving and expired documents were linked to a government vehicle crash. Meanwhile, in Omitara, a Toyota Hilux overturned after a wheel came off, seriously injuring five passengers.

A car theft was reported in Otjomuise, where a silver Renault worth N$88,000 was stolen from a car wash.

In a heartbreaking case in Sesfontein, a two-year-old child died after ingesting a suspected poisonous substance - believed to be petrol. The substance is undergoing forensic testing.

Additionally, police arrested two men near the B1 road in Mariental for possession of cannabis and mandrax tablets.

Police investigations continue across all cases, and the public is urged to report any information that may assist law enforcement.
