FIREPOWER DIMMED: Namibian police this week destroyed over 300 firearms and 80 rounds of ammunition, which were confiscated from the public since September 2024.

The weapons were all handed over voluntarily by members of the public during annual amnesty periods.

The annual September amnesty was first introduced in 2017.

Police Commissioner and head of crime prevention, Teopolina Kalompo Nashikaku, said none of the weapons had belonged to law enforcement officials.

The annual amnesty, which operates under the Arms and Ammunition Act of 1996, allows individuals to hand over firearms and ammunition at local police stations without facing legal consequences.

Namibia’s amnesty campaigns have been part of the broader African Union 'Silencing the Guns' project, aimed at reducing the proliferation of illegal arms across the continent.
