Scammers target Walvis Bay ratepayers

The municipality of Walvis Bay has cautioned residents to be wary of individuals claiming to represent the municipality and attempting to solicit money from ratepayers.

According to the municipality, a certain "Mr. De Waal", who claims to be a senior official from the municipality, is informing customers that they are in danger of getting their water cut because their accounts are allegedly overdue.

The police warned that the scammer may also use other names.

"This is a scam designed to trick ratepayers into giving away their money, personal details or data", the municipality warned.

Stay on the safe side

The municipality stressed that residents are never called to remind them to make payments and advised residents not to make any form of payment to suspicious individuals.

Residents are advised to stay on the safe side by always obtaining an official account statement from the customer service desk or by requesting a statement via email at [email protected].

Ratepayers can also verify their accounts by contacting the credit control section at 064 2013293.

The municipality further noted that there are four designated bank accounts (details obtainable from the municipality) in which payments can be made for municipal accounts. When making an online payment (ETF), customers should quote the 12-digit account number reflected on the municipal account statement as a reference and send proof of payment to [email protected]

Residents should also not provide personal or bank security information to strangers, and should they receive a call from suspicious individuals, report the matter to the nearest police station.
