Robberies, break-ins and fatal lightning strike reported over weekend
A string of robberies, housebreakings, drug-related arrests and two lightning incidents were recorded across the country over the past weekend.
According to the Namibian Police’s crime and incident report for Friday to Sunday, a 28-year-old Namibian man was arrested in Gobabis on Friday at around 19:40 after allegedly robbing a 40-year-old woman at knifepoint between the Cenored and Midwes Voere premises in the town’s industrial area.
Police said the suspect threatened the victim and her companion with a knife and grabbed the woman’s cellphone before fleeing.
A security guard who heard the victim’s screams chased and apprehended the suspect, who allegedly tried to stab him.
Two other guards helped disarm the suspect, the report said, and the stolen phone was recovered.
A subsequent police search reportedly uncovered a sachet of cannabis and a dagga pipe on the suspect. Investigations are ongoing.
Ondangwa delivery turns violent
A robbery was reported on Friday at about 11:30 at Akuna Village in the Ondangwa district, where a 26-year-old man was allegedly forced to surrender N$19 000 after delivering glass from Rundu.
Police said three men accompanying the complainant accused him of taking the glass without consent and assaulted him before taking the cash. The suspects, known to the complainant, reportedly fled to Oshakati. No arrests have been made at the time of publication.
At around 22:00 on Friday, unknown suspects robbed a bar in Eenhana. Police said the men went behind the counter, restrained the bar attendant, and stole N$1 234. No arrests had been made at the time of reporting.
Breaking and entering
Several break-ins were also reported across the country.
In Karangana village, Kavango West, unknown suspects broke into Musese shebeen at around 06:00 on Friday, cutting through five padlocks and stealing items valued at N$2 560.
In Henties Bay, a house in Eros Street, South Dune, was broken into between 00:30 and 02:00 on Friday, with two iPhone 17 Pro Max devices, cash and jewellery stolen, valued at N$91 050.
In Mariental, a 19-year-old man was arrested at about 04:30 on Saturday at the Ombili location after allegedly breaking into a house and stealing an iPad valued at N$18 000.
Two separate housebreakings were reported in Ongwediva, one involving goods estimated at N$24 800 and another in which items worth N$93 900 were stolen.
In Keetmanshoop, three suspects were arrested following a housebreaking, vehicle theft and reckless driving incident that began at about 05:00 on Saturday in Kronlein location and ended with a vehicle overturning 4.2 km outside the town. The stolen property was valued at N$193 400.
Lightning claims life
An inquest was opened after a 21-year-old man, identified as Kasera Immanuel Muyongo, died after being struck by lightning at about 15:00 on Friday at Kanyikama Village in the Mpungu constituency, Kavango West.
Police said the victim was herding cattle when a thunderstorm struck. An hour later, at the same village, a 26-year-old woman was also struck by lightning while weeding a field. She sustained severe burns and remains admitted at Nankudu State Hospital in a stable condition.
In Tsumeb’s Kuvukiland location, a 17-year-old boy was arrested at about 05:00 on Friday after police found cannabis and Mandrax tablets valued at N$1 520 during a joint operation. He was due to appear in court on Monday.
In Katutura, a 34-year-old man was arrested at around 14:30 on Friday at the B1 City complex service station after drugs sent from Swakopmund were intercepted at the Okapuka checkpoint. Two women aged 34 and 38 were also arrested in Opuwo at about 11:09 on Friday at Orutjandja West for possession of cannabis valued at N$9 600.
Serious crimes and arrests
A rape case was reported in Okakarara between 07:00 and 08:00 on Friday, where a 17-year-old boy was arrested for allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl at a house in the area.
In Okahandja, a 39-year-old man was arrested at about 15:09 on Saturday at a service station on the main road for allegedly selling a leopard skin without a permit. The skin was valued at N$80 000.
Additional cases included thefts in Rehoboth and Ovitoto, stock theft and possession of suspected stolen meat in Rehoboth, malicious damage to property in Extension 2, Rehoboth, and a fraud case in Brakwater, where a pensioner lost more than N$170 000 to a suspect impersonating a bank official.
