'Rapist' demands more info about complaint
“For lack of a better word – we are bare. We gave everything we had. There is simply not enough information to reveal to the accused."
These were public prosecutor Felistas Sikerete's words to Judge Naomi Shivute in the trial of a pensioner and his co-accused who are facing 15 charges related to the alleged rape of an 11-year-old girl at Noordoewer.
Dirk von Weidts (72) and Arrie Jors (age unknown) are facing charges of rape, child trafficking and kidnapping due to incidents which reportedly took place between October 2020 and January 2021.
Von Weidts insisted that the state provide more details regarding the complaint against him. He claimed that the lack of information makes it difficult for him and his legal representative, Percy NcNally, to oppose the complaint.
"The accused is confronted by a host of issues, but the details are not provided to him," McNally told Shivute.
Sikerete argued that it is not the State's responsibility to inform the accused, who is represented by a qualified lawyer, about the law.
"It is clear that the state will bring evidence... An accused is not entitled to know all the details," she said.
