Police seize drugs worth N$3.5m at Ariamsvlei border post
Border officials have uncovered a major drug consignment worth more than N$3.5 million at the Ariamsvlei Border Post in the early hours of Sunday, 19 October 2025.
The discovery was made when border officers conducting a routine patrol noticed suspicious shoe tracks leading under a bridge near the border entry point.
Upon following the tracks, officials found three large Sport Ruixingda bags hidden under the structure.
No suspects were found in the area, and the footprints eventually merged with other tracks, making it difficult for investigators to trace those responsible.
Police revealed that when the bags were opened, officers discovered large quantities of cannabis and mandrax tablets.
The haul included 59 parcels of cannabis, an additional 55 grams of loose cannabis, and 4 073 full mandrax tablets.
Police confirmed that the total weight of the cannabis was 60.55 kilograms, valued at approximately N$3 027 500, while the mandrax tablets carried an estimated street value of N$488 760, bringing the total to N$3 516 260.
All the seized drugs were registered as found property and taken for further forensic analysis.
Police say investigations are ongoing to identify the individuals or networks involved in the smuggling attempt.
Suicides
Meanwhile, across the country, police recorded several other serious incidents over the weekend.
Several tragic suicides were reported in Endola, Outapi, Seeis, Bethanie, and Wanaheda, where victims were found dead by hanging.
In each of these cases, police confirmed that no foul play was suspected, and post-mortem examinations will be conducted to determine the exact causes of death.
Drug-related operations also continued in other regions.
Police in Keetmanshoop arrested a man for dealing in crack cocaine, while separate arrests in Ondangwa, Rehoboth, and Mariental led to the seizure of smaller amounts of cannabis and mandrax.
The suspects are expected to appear in court in the coming days as investigations proceed.
Road accidents were also a concern, with several collisions recorded in Otjomuise, Katima Mulilo, Okahandja, and Seeis, some resulting in serious injuries and one fatal crash in Katutura. Police investigations into these matters are ongoing.
