Petrol bombers target chief’s house in Uis
The house of the chief of the Daure Daman community in Uis, Zacharias Seibeb, was attacked with petrol bombs on Tuesday.
Four suspects were arrested in connection with the incident. They have since been released and warned to appear at the Omaruru Magistrate's Court today.
According to police spokesperson Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi, the suspects used Savanna bottles filled with a petrol mixture and cloth to create improvised incendiary devices, which they threw onto the roof and into the home of the 68-year-old chief.
The attack occurred between 13:00 and 14:00 at the Tanigub block in Uis location.
Parts of the building were damaged by fire, and the full extent of the damage is still being assessed.
The suspects, aged 29, 37, 47 and 71, face charges of arson, contravening the Explosives Act for possession and supply of explosives and violation of bail conditions.
No injuries were reported at the time of the incident.
Troubling day
This arson attack followed an earlier incident the same day, where seven other individuals, among them a 71-year-old woman and a 64-year-old woman, were arrested for storming the premises of the Daure Daman Traditional Authority office.
The premises are subject to a High Court order prohibiting entry by unauthorised persons.
Police said the group disrupted officers on duty at around 13:00 by forcefully entering the yard of the traditional authority’s office at the Dauredam location. They are being charged with obstructing police officers in the execution of their duties and obstructing the administration of justice in terms of the Riotous Assemblies Act.
The conflict is believed to centre around allegations against the chief and traditional authority for financial mismanagement and a lack of development initiatives.
